Byron Chu of the Daily Oil Bulletin reported that the Oil and Gas Industry conducted it's own opinon poll about Canadians' perception of the industry. The results are not surprising;
71% - believe that the oilsands can be developed while protecting the environment
46% - believe oilsands firms are not balancing environment and economy
22% - believe they have achieved this balance
50% - don't believe what oilsands executives say in the media, 13% do.
44% - don't believe any information given out by oilsands companies, 20% do.
Based on this opinion poll conducted by CAPP, even if many of the producers in the oilsands have taken extreme measures to balance the environment and the economy, most people would not believe them.
David Collyer, president of CAPP, explained that many other industries and sectors will be needed to change the public's perception about development of the oilsands. The producers in the oilsands have their work cut out for them. Not only will it be necessary for them to innovate and find new ways to preserve the environment during production, they will also need to overcome the persona earned over the many years.
